The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie is a poetic play by Tennessee Williams published in 1944. The story unravels in 1937 during the Great Depression, in a poor family of a mother and her two grown-up children. The father has left the family. There are no heroes in this story, only three vulnerable characters – Amanda, Tom and Laura – and one eagerly awaited guest, Jim. The story is told from the viewpoint of the son Tom Wingfield, who is the narrator of the play and whose memories we see unfold. Tennessee Williams gives a voice to fragile characters, trying to understand and represent them, trying to explain their strength, resilience and inner resistance.
Director Maria Peterson:
For me, it is a beautiful polyphonic play about fragility and tenderness. The most beautiful facet of being human. How to notice and sustain it in ourselves and protect it in others.
